Hephaestus God of Fire by BethanyHunter

Somewhere in the outskirts of Fortune City in an abandoned house, October 3, 2015 11:10 PM:

"DO YOU DARE DEFY YOUR GOD?" A man clad in a black and red robe shouted, his face hidden by what seemed like a demonic mask.

"Nonono, please I won't defy you. Have mercy!" Another man pleaded for his life, his voice failing him.

"YOUR INSOLENCE CANNOT GO UNPUNISHED! YOU WILL BE PURIFIED IN THE FIRE OF MY RETRIBUTION!" The demonic man replied, his tone firm.

Before the man could plead his case, the demonic figure his hands and from them a gulf of flames ensnare the pleading man.

"NOOOOO PLEASE!!! AHGHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAAHAAHAHAHAHAHA STOP IT PLEASEEEEEE AHHHHHHHH MY SKIIIIIN!!!" The other man screamed, but his pleads of mercy fell on deaf ears and no long after, the pleading stopped.

As the man ceased to be, consumed by the flames, the fire began to spread through the rest of the room and not long after the entire house was engulfed in flames. The screams of the demonic figure were the only thing that could be heard.

Burned House, October 4, 2015 10:45 AM

"So you dragged me to the middle of nowhere to take a look at a burned house?" Bethany asked Jolene, "I dunno what kind of detective you think I am, but I don't particularly work with arson."

"If you would let me show you the scene, you would understand. This isn't a simple arson case, Beth." Jolene replied.

The two women walked over a small hill that led to the burned house. Truth be told, back in the old days the house would had been considered an elegant abode. Surrounded by natural beauty and without any neighbors to bother, this would be the place any retired couple would like to spend their last years.

"Speaking of, who's the owner of the house?" Bethany asked.

"The house has been abandoned for over 30 years. Used to belong to James Stanson, the drug-lord of the 60's." Jolene replied.

"Ohh that would explain why the house is located in such a remote place," Bethany paused for a moment as she had to avoid stepping in mud, " But that doesn't explain our current case. Stanson's been dead for quite a while, he didn't leave heirs and unless his ghost is trying to avoid some after life property tax, I don't see a connection." Bethany replied.

"Stanson's not a lead on this case. We are not sure yet as to who did it. In fact that's why you are here." Jolene smirked.

"Oh? And why's that? As I said, I don't specialize in arson." Bethany replied.

"You'll see soon enough."

They arrived at the remains of the burned house. Jolene opened the door and they entered. Inside, the arson team was investigating for any possible leads as to the source of the fire, however what caught the attention of Bethany was the fact that there was also a forensics team. Jolene led Bethany to what seemed to be the living room. In the middle of it layed a corpse, in a kneeling position. The fire had been so strong that the skin had been entirely burnt.

"This is why I brought you here, as I said, this isn't a simple arson case." Jolene looked at Bethany with a serious stare, one uncommon of her.

"Now this is more in my field of work, but I'm still curious. Why did you specifically brought me here? Your forensics team can sort it out." Bethany replied.

"There's something else I want to show you, it's in a closet in the next room." Jolene said.

Before Bethany could reply, Jolene grabbed her by the hand and led her to the closet. Once inside she closed the door and made sure that no one could hear them.

"Here is the thing, I don't think they can solve this case. I think this falls more along the work of your other persona." Jolene continued with her serious stare.

"Ohh! So you think that I need to send you know who to investigate?" Bethany asked.

"Precisely so. I think what we are dealing with here is far more dangerous than they imagine. This doesn't look like the work of a simple murderer." Jolene remained serious.

"Very well, I can work with that, but I'll need to investigate the area a bit. Any info you got would be helpful." Bethany replied.

"You'll have full access to what we know, as of now, you are special member of our team. And in case you are wondering, no, they won't know of the other you," Jolene paused, " Now let's go back out there before they suspect anything."

"I'm curious though, since when do you care about Fortune City? I thought......" Bethany chuckled.

"You may know my dirty little secret, but that doesn't mean that you know all of my intentions. I do care for this city and my job, and I do intent on catching those who harm others." Jolene replied, her tone as serious.

"I have to admit, I'm impressed. You do have some degree of conscience!" Bethany chuckled as they made their way back to the room.

Bethany and Jolene made their way back to the living room, where the forensics team was at full work. Bethany took a long at the room and tried to see if she could find some sort of clue, but everything had been burned down to the point of no recognition. She took a look at the corpse and decided to ask the forensic team for clues.

"I know that at this point it's almost impossible to identify the victim, but do you have any leads or theories as to whom it could be?" Bethany asked.

"Seeing as how a DNA test will be next to impossible, we'll need to examine their denture to determine who it is. Luckily the denture was preserved." A member of the forensics team replied.

"We have a report of a missing person as a matter of fact. It was reported earlier this morning, before we even knew about this. Apparently one Jacob Andrews has been missing for a whole day. He didn't report to work yesterday and his family hasn't seen him in over 30 hours. Which is odd, because he lives with his wife and two kids and has never disappeared without notification." Jolene added.

"Interesting, and where does Mr. Andrews works?" Bethany asked.

"He's a doctor at the institute for the mentally insane, Clark Mental Hospital." Jolene replied.

"Interesting, I know someone there who could probably help us. I could contact her while you investigate this side." Bethany added, "Like you I'm beginning to think that this isn't a mere coincidence."

"Agreed, you can work that. I'll go back to the precinct and continue......" Before Jolene could finish she was interrupted by a call, "Hold on a minute, Bethany."

As soon as she took the call, her expression changed, she seemed to be disturbed by whatever news she got.

"BETHANY WE NEED TO GO!" Jolene shouted as soon as she hanged up.

"Wait what, why?!!" Bethany asked, worried.

"NO TIME TO EXPLAIN! THERE'S ANOTHER HOUSE BURNING! LET'S GO!"

Without hesitation the two women ran back to the patrol car and made their way to the scene of the crime as fast as they could.

????? Residence, October 4, 2015 11:20 AM

The burning house wasn't very far from where the original one was located. However this one was inhabited by an old lady. As soon as Bethany and Jolene arrived, they saw the two story house burning.

"HEEEEEELPPPPP!" The old woman could be heard screaming.

Jolene quickly got out of the car and grabbed her pistol. She threw a pistol at Bethany as well.

"You know how to shoot, right?" Jolene asked.

"Yeah, I have experience." Bethany replied.

The two women quickly ran to the house, tearing the door down. Seeing as it would easily take more than fifteen minutes for the cops and firefighters to arrive, it was up to Bethany and Jolene to save the old lady. They made their way through the fire, trying to see where the lady was. To no avail they couldn't find her.

"WHERE IS HE?!?!" The voice of a man demanded some sort of answer.

Thanks to that voice, Bethany and Jolene managed to deduce that the crime was taking place in the upper level of the house. Jolene went ahead, dodging incoming debris and Bethany followed quickly. Once in the upper level, they have split up, Bethany took to the right while Jolene decided to explore the left side. Bethany found the bedroom and in doing so she spotted the old lady and her guest. Before her very eyes stood a figure clad in black and red robes with what seemed like a demonic mask. Bethany was preparing for an incapacitating shot, but the demonic figure spotted her and from his hand, he shot a ball of fire at Bethany. Luckily, she managed to dodge the attack, but in doing so she lost the gun. The man quickly shifted his attention to her, grabbing her by the throat and lifting her.

"WHO DARES STAND IN THE WAY OF HEPHAESTUS, GOD OF THE FIRE?" The demonic voice asked.

"The.....w...e......." Bethany tried to speak but his grasp on her was cutting her ability to breathe.

"YOU SHALL BE PUNISHED LIKE THE REST!" The demonic figure seemed ready to attack.

As Hephaestus was about to burn Bethany, Jolene made her way to the scene. She shot at Hephaestus, but due to the smoke and blurry vision, missed. However her shot was good enough to make him lose his grasp on Bethany. Jolene try to shoot at him once more, but he shot a ball of fire at her as well. Bethany regained composure and tackled him, giving Jolene the chance to escape the flames.

"Jolene, hurry! Grab the lady and make your way to the car." Bethany said.

Jolene did as instructed, grabbed the old lady and made her way outside, dodging the debris that kept piling up. Meanwhile Bethany was trying to hold Hephaestus under her control, but he managed to escape. He tried to shoot fire at her once more, but she managed to escape. Hephaestus looked at her and said:

"I SHALL DEAL WITH YOU LATER, BUT FOR KNOW I MUST TAKE MY LEAVE. HOWEVER, DO NOT THINK YOU HAVE WON! YOU HAVE MERELY DELAYED THE INEVITABLE!"

Hephaestus then proceeded to jump through a window and make his escape. As much as she wanted to catch him, she had no time to deal with him. First she needed to cover her mouth and nose with her blouse, otherwise the smoke would make her lose consciousness. The fire was intensifying and so was the smoke. She began to slowly descend through the stairs, debris falling from all places. It was intense, but she managed to come through unscathed.

Once outside, Jolene quickly looked at her, to see if she had sustained any injuries.

"I'm fine," Bethany said, " What about her? An experience like this for a woman of her age could easily kill her."

"She's unconscious and needs medical attention. Which is why I need you to take her to the hospital." Jolene said.

"But what about you?" Bethany asked.

"I need to stay here and wait for the firefighters and cops to arrive. I'll see if I can find any clues," Jolene replied, "However, there's no time to waste, take the car and go!"

Bethany nodded. She took the old lady, put her in the back of the car and got in. She drove back to the hospital as swift as she could, the life of the lady was at stake.

St. John Hospital, October 4, 2015 12:40 PM

Bethany drove all the way from the outskirts and back into Fortune City as fast as she could. She arrived at the hospital 20 minutes after the incident. The doctors quickly took care of the old lady and stabilized her. Bethany opted to wait until the lady was well.

After a short while, the old lady regained consciousness and Bethany decided to visit her and see how she was doing. The woman looked at Bethany and smiled.

"I heard that I have to thank you, for saving my life. If it hadn't been by you, I would had been burned to a crisp. If I may ask, what's your name? I want to know the name of my savior." The woman coughed, the smoke had taken its toll on her.

"I'm Bethany Hunter. No need to thank me, madame, I was just doing my job." Bethany replied.

"Bethany? What a lovely name for such a lovely young miss. I hope your parents are proud of you, you are a model citizen," The woman smiled, " My name is Alicia Turner, if there is anything I can do for you, don't hesitate to ask." Alicia smiled.

"Actually madame, I know it must be a painful experience, but if there's anything you can tell me about what you witnessed, I would appreciate it," Bethany replied, "I was investigating an arson case that happened not very far from where you live. I believe both cases might be connected."

"Oh dear, I don't even know what happened, all I have is vague memories," Alicia seemed disturbed by the memories, " When I saw that image, it looked like a demon from hell itself had come to pay a visit to me. I was terrified, I didn't know what to do."

"I know, madame, I saw it and it was quite an imposing figure," Bethany paused, "However, I don't think he was there by mere chance as he asked you about someone."

"You are right, dear. I don't think it was a coincidence either. I been trying to think of someone, but my memory is a bit foggy..." Alicia replied.

"It's ok, madame, I don't want to strain you." Bethany said.

"Oh not to worry, dear. I owe you my life and you are doing us all a favor by solving this. You have to be careful, however, that man seems extremely volatile."

"I know, I will. But I won't rest until the people can sleep safely without fearing that this man may stalk them." Bethany replied.

"Such a wonderful caring person, you are. If only Kevin had turned out like you...." Alicia suddenly seemed saddened.

"Kevin? Who is Kevin?" Bethany asked.

"Ohh he is one of my grandsons. Used to be a very bright kid, but something bad must have happened to him. He became an anti social and had issues with everyone in the family, especially his father. I haven't seen him in years, last I heard of him, he was hospitalized or something like that, can't quite remember." Alicia replied.

"Hospitalized? Do you have any idea where he might have been hospitalized?" Bethany asked.

"I think it was Claire something or Clark was it?" Alicia didn't gave it much thought.

"Clark's Mental Hospital?" Bethany asked once more.

"Yes! Now that you mention it, that's the name! I must say dear, does this helps you in any way?" Alicia asked, puzzled.

"In more ways than what you might think, madame. I think I may have a lead on who that demon is." Bethany replied.

"You don't think that.....OH NO! Dear, if what you think is true, then my son is in great danger! Please if you can, warn his father, Steven. If what you are saying is true, then the person he is looking for is none other than his own father." Alicia quickly became worried.

"I'll notify the authorities, they will contact him and make sure he is safe. For know, you need to rest, madame." Bethany replied.

"Thank you, dear. If it's truly him, then I warn you to be very careful, Kevin is just as equally bright as he is strange. Oh Kevin, for the sake of everyone, I hope you are behaving." Alicia seemed once more, worried.

Bethany bid farewell and left the hospital. She made a call to Jolene to tell her about the lead that she had just found.

"You found anything yet, Bethany?" Jolene asked.

"Yep, I got a lead. Apparently there's a chance that our "Hephaestus" is someone named Kevin Turner. He was hospitalized in Clark Mental Hospital." Bethany replied.

"Clark Mental Hospital? Well the plot thickens then, because the lab guys just brought us the results and the denture confirmed our suspicion. The victim was Jacob Andrews." Jolene pondered.

"Well there's no other way around it. I'm gonna go to Clark's and talk with my contact there. I'll see what I can find," Bethany paused, " Meanwhile, I need you to find Steven Turner and protect him. If my hunch is right, Kevin is after his father."

"Ok got it. I'll have my boys search for him." Jolene said, "Good luck out there and be careful."

Clark Mental Hospital, October 4, 2015 3:10 PM

After Bethany was done interrogating Alicia at the hospital, she decided to take a quick break. She headed back to her apartment to take a shower and get something to eat. After almost being burned, she needed to cool off for a bit. Once she was done, she decided to head to Clark Mental Hospital. There she hoped to piece together the puzzle that was this case.

Once she was in the mental institute, she asked for Naomi Evans. Naomi had proven to be a valuable ally, during some of her recent cases and she was sure that Naomi could help her crack this case. The receptionist quickly notified Dr. Evans and she allowed Bethany to enter. As always, the young doctor greeted Bethany like a close friend. Bethany and Naomi had worked together in a few cases, capturing psychopaths in the process. Thanks to Bethany, Naomi was treated with much respect around the staff, even though she was the youngest doctor. Bethany always found her curious, to her, Naomi had this unique modern 50's style in the way she dressed and styled her hair, which in turn made her very elegant.

"So Beth, to what do I owe the pleasure." Naomi asked.

"I'm tracking down an arsonist and I think you might be of help." Bethany replied.

"An arsonist?" Naomi seemed puzzled for a moment, but then it hit her, "Oh no...."

"Seems like you know a bit. Does the name Kevin Turner ring any bells?" Bethany asked.

"Kevin Turner?! Oh god, I knew this would happen." Naomi seemed worried.

"What would happen?" Bethany asked.

"You see, a few days ago, one of our patients escaped. However, the general police force hasn't been notified. The upper level wanted this to remain a secret as they dealt with the situation." Naomi said, looking over the window, "I told them that he was a very dangerous threat and that we needed to notify the authorities. But they didn't want to start a media craze. They were afraid that this would result in bad publicity for the institute and cause legal trouble."

"Are they insane?!!??! If this had been notified, there wouldn't be a potential serial killer out there right now!" Bethany seemed frustrated.

"I know and yes, it's just as you fear, the one who escaped is Kevin Turner." Naomi seemed more worried.

"Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but he has already killed someone." Bethany replied.

"What?!?! Who???" Naomi asked.

"A doctor from this institute, Dr. Jacob Andrews." Bethany replied, with her arms crossed.

"Dr. Andrews?!?!? Oh no!! His poor family!Dr. Andrews was one of the best doctors here, he always cared for his patients and treated them with respect. He was the first one that said we should notify the authorities, the cruel irony." Naomi seemed like she was ready to cry.

"I know this is very painful, Naomi, but right now I need you to be strong. I need you to tell me everything that you can about Turner." Bethany hugged her, trying to console her.

".....I know, I'll try my best. I was recently investigating in the matter. Got his file here." Naomi broke the hug to grab a file and give it to Bethany.

"Let's start with the basics. Why would he kill Dr. Andrews?" Bethany asked.

"Turner was a patient of Dr. Andrews, apparently he had some sort of grudge. Maybe Andrews knew too much about him or something." Naomi replied.

"All right. Now I need some general information about him. Who he is, what he used to do, that sort of thing." Bethany began to take a look at the file.

"From what I gathered, Kevin Turner used to be a mechanical engineer student. One of the brightest, apparently. However, his family wasn't very wealthy and couldn't afford his studies. So he got a lot of student loans that he couldn't pay. Eventually with a pile of debt on his shoulders, Kevin had no other option, so he joined the army." Naomi explained.

"So he's a war veteran?" Bethany asked.

"It would seem so. Apparently he was pretty good there too. In fact so good, that some in the military felt envy towards him?" Naomi continued.

"Envy? Why?" Bethany was confused by the story.

"Well since he was a mechanical engineer, he rose through the ranks rather fast. However, something happened that demoted him. Rumor has it that some of the higher ranks conspired and set him a trap. He fell for it and they ended up demoting him. He was put in a special group composed of the worst soldiers. This group is used as a unit for sure death missions." Naomi continued.

"So he was framed and sent to death, huh?" Bethany pondered.

"Exactly. Stripped from his honor and sent on a sure death mission, Turner was assigned as a pyro unit. And that's where it happened. Apparently in one of those missions, Turner burned over 70 people including civilians. The images of those people screaming and burning alive was permanently engraved in his mind. The pain was too much to bear, he lost his grip on reality. Eventually he was discharged and brought back to the states." Naomi explained.

"That would explain why he is an arsonist, however I still need some more details as to why he became "Hephaestus"." Bethany added.

"Stripped from his honor, sent on a mission where he was supposed to die and burning over 70 people, all of that is a recipe for disaster. Obviously Turner was ashamed of himself, disgusted by his actions. When he was brought back here, he was suffering from some severe PTSD. However things got even worse when his father realized what had happened. Unaware of the conspiracy against him, his father believed that he had truly shamed the military and his family. Turner already had mental problems, so this was the last straw. His grip on reality broke once and for all." Naomi paused, "Turner has always been a crafty person, he comes up with inventions and whatnot. It's for that very reason that he became a mechanical engineer. He was also very fond of Greek Mythology. So..."

"When his last connection with reality broke, he adopted a persona that would fit what he would like to be," Bethany added, "Hephaestus was known as the god of the blacksmiths and fire. Something Turner has in common. He saw this as a way of turning the burning image that scarred him into something that empowered him."

"Precisely so, Beth." Naomi replied.

"I feel sorry for him, truly. But I have to find a way to stop him." Bethany said, pondering as to how to stop him.

"Turner is an extremely dangerous man, direct contact could be deadly. A pyromaniac with military training" Naomi said.

"I know, I fought him." Bethany replied.

"You did?!? Count yourself lucky that you are still standing here." Naomi replied.

"I know, and after my encounter with him, I know that I can't face him head on." Bethany pondered.

"Your best bet would be to bring a conflict between Turner and Hephaestus." Naomi replied.

"A conflict?" Bethany asked.

"Yes, appeal to his real side, make him come out of the twisted nightmare he has created for himself, even if for a small moment." Naomi explained, "If you can make him remember that he is Kevin Turner, he might be able to stop for a moment, then you can capture him."

"Sounds like that's the only shot, I got." Bethany added, "Thanks Naomi, I know I can always count on you."

"Anytime and please be very careful. I don't want.....to lose you." Naomi seemed worried.

"Don't worry, I'll be alright thanks to your advice!" Bethany winked.

Bethany's Apartment, October 4, 2015 7:15 PM

After her talk with Naomi, Bethany headed back to her apartment. She was preparing her strategy and gear for the night. This time around, she would need a gas mask and a few more gadgets that would allow her to resist the heat temperatures better. With her equipment set, she waited for Jolene to call and tell her about the next course of actions. Not long after, her phone rang.

"Hey Jolene, everything ok?" Bethany asked.

"Not at all! Hephaestus found Steven before us, he kidnapped him, my boys tried to stop him but he was to much. He gave minor burns to some of them, I'm chasing him but it seems he is headed to the city park. Need help!!" Jolene was distressed and her tone show as much.

"Don't worry, I'm on my way!" Bethany replied and hanged up, running back to her secret room.

Bethany quickly put on her gear and suit. Hephaestus might be the god of fire, but he was about to find out that in Fortune City you don't mess with the Mistress of the Night.

Fortune Park, October 4, 2015 7:45

Nocturne quickly gave chase in her motorcycle. She tracked Jolene's location and followed after her. With her speed, she managed to catch on but by then things had already escalated. Nocturne stood in front of the city park, a wondrous park fill with hundreds of trees and greenery, however that was not the scenery of that night. What Nocturne saw were trees burning and people running away, scared. On top of that, she noticed that Jolene was laying in the floor against her patrol car. Nocturne decided to check on Jolene before she headed into the park.

"You all right?" Nocturne asked.

"I'll be fine.....got a minor burn in my arm when I was chasing that guy, but I sprained my ankle when I tried to dodge. Won't be able to chase after him." Jolene replied.

"Don't worry about him, I'll take care of him. You need to call backup and firefighters. This is going to be messy if they don't come soon." Nocturne said.

"Got it. Be careful out there, though." Jolene replied once more.

"Don't worry about me, I'll be fine." Nocturne was confident.

Nocturne made her way inside the park. Apparently in his conflict with Jolene, Hephaestus shot fire at some of the trees, which in turn cause a fire to engulf a part of the park. Nocturne made her way to the center of the park, avoiding the fire and the burning trees, as some of the burning branches began to fall all over the place. Once she reached the center, she found Hephaestus, who had placed his tied father in a table.

"THIS MAN WILL BE THE SACRIFICE THAT WILL BRING UPON THE DAWN OF A NEW AGE!" Hephaestus proclaimed.

"STOP THIS NONSENSE NOW!" Nocturne shouted.

Hephaestus took notice of Nocturne and moved towards.

"MISTRESS OF DARKNESS YOU WILL NOT HALT THE BECOMING OF A NEW ERA! DECEASE OR CEASE TO BE!" Hephaestus shouted.

"Kevin you don't need to do this. You are better than that. I know deep inside you don't want to do this." Nocturne appealed to Kevin.

"KEVIN!?! I DO NOT KNOW THIS MAN YOU SPEAK OF. I AM HEPHAESTUS, GOD OF FIRE AND I SHALL BE ADDRESSED AS SUCH!" Hephaestus pointed his hands at Nocturne, "ADDRESS ME AS MY TITLE BECKONS OR DIE IN THE FLAMES OF MY FURY!

"If you will not listen to reason, then I'll beat reason into that thick headed skull of yours!" Nocturne prepared for fight.

Hephaestus shot two balls of fire at Nocturne, but the latter dodged them, she quickly motioned into action and hit him with some punches. While they did not do much, they proved to disrupt his behavior to some extent. Most importantly, by fighting in close quarters, Nocturne made sure that hitting her with a ball of fire would prove to be a bit trickier. It could also proved to be the contrary and get her burned faster, but it was time to play the high stakes high rewards game.

Hephaestus countered Nocturne's hits with some of his own, but to his dismay, she managed to dodge most. Those that did hit, hurt her bad, however. As Nocturne tried to launch an uppercut, Hephaestus blocked it by stunning her. He then stood back as he prepared to burn her. However, Nocturne managed to throw a smoke ball and thus made it impossible for him to accurately hit her.

In the split second that she managed to escape from his grasp, Nocturne quickly shifted her attention to Steven. She cut the rope quickly and instructed him to run. Hephaestus hadn't noticed yet and Nocturne decided to stall him by attacking him in full assault once more. She launched an array of punches and since his vision was still distorted by the smoke, he couldn't dodge them. However once his vision got cleared, he noticed that Steven was making a run for it through the woods.

"MISTRESS OF DARKNESS YOU HAVE DECEIVED ME WITH YOUR TRICKERY! YOU WILL PAY, BUT NOT BEFORE I DEAL WITH THAT MAN!" Hephaestus said as he began to give chase.

Nocturne followed after him, they began to run through the park's woods. As soon as he noticed she was after him, he began to launch fire at the trees, causing another massive fire in the woods. Smoke and fire began to engulf the park, luckily Nocturne's visor and gas mask allowed her to operate even in an hostile environment. She continued chasing after him, dodging the fire as best as she could. However, in one instance a burning branch fell and was about to hit her, and while she managed to dodge it, her cape caught fire. She ripped the cape from her attire, which meant that she couldn't launch an aerial attack now. Nevertheless, she made her way deeper into the woods.

"WHERE ARE YOU FRAIL MAN?" Hephaestus shouted.

Nocturne managed to find the source of the voice and located Hephaestus. He was so focused on finding Steven, that he was not prepared for Nocturne, who took the opportunity to tackle him against a tree. She began to punch him in the rips in an attempt to make him lose breath. While the hits where successful, they didn't managed to knock him out. Hephaestus retaliated by hitting Noctune in the back, causing her to fall on the ground. Nocturne quickly recovered and found herself in the defensive. Dodging his fire and the branches, although some of the branches did managed to hit her, causing rips in her costume and stockings.

The fight raged on as Hephaestus continued trying to stop Nocturne and chase Steven. Nocturne kept stalling him by attacking, however once more, in an instant he managed to dodge her attack and push her aside. He took the opportunity to continue his search.

Steven had run for a good ten minutes, but he had his age and his body was not what it used to be. He couldn't keep running anymore and his knees betrayed him, making him fall to the ground. Hephaestus was close to him, ready to strike.

"Kevin you don't want to kill your father!" Nocturne shouted, "Haven't you killed enough?"

"SILENCE MISTRESS OF DARKNESS DO NOT INTERFERE!" Hephaestus screamed.

"Kevin, I know it's painful. I know that you regret what you did. But you can't live in the past. What's done is done." Nocturne continued, slowly making her way to Hephaestus.

"SILENCE....YOu don't UNdeRstand...." Hephaestus voice began to sound weaker.

"What they did to you was a crime. You did not shame the military or your family. You were betrayed and you deserve justice. But this is not the way to do it. Is burning more people going to erase the memory of what you did?" Nocturne's tone seemed more gentle.

"SILENCE!! I I I don't know what to do" Hephaestus began to lose grip of his control.

"Kevin, your father is sorry for what he did and said. We all make mistakes, but more mistakes won't solve the original one. By killing your father you are not going to solve anything. You are going to dig a deeper hole than the one in which you are right now." Nocturne tried to sound as sweet and gentle as possible.

"I dunnoo I don't want to but I have to. He ordered me to do it." "Hephaestus" said.

"He only has control of you, because you let him. Because you let him take advantage of you. Don't let him win. Be yourself. Be Kevin." Nocturne replied.

"I'm sorry son, I'm sorry about everything I said and did. I should had known better. You deserve better." Steven added.

"I I I dad I I please, SILENCE, nooo, FIREEEE, help, BUUUURRRRN, me, RETRIBUTION, scared." Hephaestus was struggling to keep the nightmare going.

"Don't let him win, Kevin. You are not alone, your father is here, I am here, we want to save you. Be strong. I know you can," Nocturne paused, "You can run away from your past as much as you want, but only by facing it and moving on, will you truly be freed."

"I I I I I AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" Hephaestus lost control of Kevin.

"Forgive me, father." Kevin's last words before he collapsed in the floor.

"Welcome back, son." Steven grabbed the unconscious Kevin and hugged him.

With Kevin unconscious, Nocturne managed to drag him and Steven out of the burning park. By then, the whole fire deparment had arrived and they were taking care of the flames. Everyone had been evacuated from the park and there hadn't been any injuries. Nocturne handled Kevin to the authorities and the crisis was finally adverted.

"I dunno how you managed to stop him, but that was fantastic work. The fire team said that they'll be able to contain the fire within the park and that it won't be entirely destroyed." Jolene said.

"Yeah, well honestly, I dunno how I managed to get to him myself. But what matters is that the situation is under control." Nocturne replied.

"By the way, you are on the news. They are saying that local heroine put a stop to a psychopath." Jolene smirked.

"That's nice of them, but I'm not doing any interviews. I'm going back home and taking a cold shower, after today, I really need to cool off." Nocturne replied.

Nocturne bid farewell and headed back home. After being put through the fire and the flame, all she wanted was a cup of cold and sweet ice cream.

I appreciated the detective being to the fore, and you're right about the resolution making more sense in getting Nocturne to reach the alpha personality to put the beta "back in his box" rather than just giving the beta a beat down, particularly then you'd already established that she doesn't have the physical power to do that.
